OnePlus has officially launched its recent flagship range. The 2021 smartphone range includes the OnePlus 9, the OnePlus 9 Pro and, in some places, the OnePlus 9R.
The OnePlus 9R is the lowest of the three phones, but as an exclusive India and China, it has not found the same attention here as the 9 and 9 Pro.
Here is everything you need to know about OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9R, including the cost and comparison of screen, camera and performance.
If you are in the market for a new phone, be sure to check out our summary of the best phones, the best Android phones and the best mid-range phones (which the OnePlus 9 has already surpassed).
Price and availability-How much do they cost?
The OnePlus 9 has been placed in the new range above the OnePlus 9R and below the OnePlus 9 Pro. The phone comes in two configurations – for 8GB RAM / 128GB storage or/ 8 829 for 12GB RAM / 256GB storage – and can be ordered today.
The OnePlus 9R is the lowest member of the OnePlus 9 family and only -in India, where it will be launched in April. The phone has 12 GB of RAM/256 GB of memory and will also be available in China from mid-April. However, we do not expect the 9R to arrive in the UK or the US soon, so the OnePlus 9 could be easier to put in your hands if you are ready to upgrade.
Design and displays similar to the display
- Both Phones have 120Hz refresh screens
- Different color and weight options
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9R offer similar displays. Both phones feature a 6.55-inch OLED display with 1080p resolution, HDR10+ support and 120Hz refresh rate. Both Phones also have a fingerprint Sensor under the Screen.
There is a small difference in weight since the OnePlus 9 switches the scale to 192g and the 9R to 189g.However, the most obvious way in which the designs differ is the color.
The OnePlus 9 is available in three colors-winter fog, arctic sky and Astral black– while the 9R is available in only two colors, navy blue and carbon black.
Camera-a new Hasselblad partnership
- Different camera differences between the two
- The OnePlus 9R holds the macro camera of the 8T
This time, OnePlus partnered with Hasselblad to” develop”the rear view camera of the OnePlus 9. There is no Hasselblad brand on the OnePlus 9R.
The triple camera configuration of the OnePlus 9 includes:
- One 48mp (f/1.8) wide angle sensor with ice
- One 50MP Ultra wide angle sensor
- One 2MP monochrome sensor
The Quad camera configuration of the OnePlus 9R includes:
- One 48mp main sensor (f/1.7)
- An ultra-wide 16MP sensor
- One 5MP Macro sensor
- One 2MP monochrome sensor
The configuration of the 9R is the same as last year’s flagship OnePlus 8T. we found the camera of the 8T good, but it has become rare compared to its rivals. The photos were over-processed and the colors sometimes seemed abnormal. We also found that the macro sensor was a bit tricky.
The OnePlus 9 gives up the macro lens and while the shots are sometimes still overworked, we were generally impressed by the Hasselblad camera. Auto mode offers fast shutter and autofocus speeds for moving subjects and the Ultra-wide sensor is ideal for capturing detailed landscapes.
Both phones are equipped with 16MP Selfie cameras and support 4K video recording at 60fps.
Performance – improved performance all around, but no wireless charging for the 9R
- Both should be very capable devices
- OnePlus addresses the 9R to gamers
- Both feature 8-series Qualcomm chipsets
The OnePlus 9 is powered by Qualcomm’s 2021 Snapdragon 888 5g chipset, while the 9R is equipped with the Snapdragon 870 5G. Both Processors are an Improvement over the Snapdragon 865 from 8T.
Of course, it is difficult to compare the performance of the two phones when we have not yet got our hands on the 9R. However, we found that the OnePlus 9 was at the same level of performance as the more expensive 9 Pro. The phone can run demanding games without problems with the highest settings, has a robust cooling system and can easily edit large RAW files.

As for the battery, the OnePlus 9 is equipped with a 4500mAh battery and supports Qi wireless charging and OnePlus ‘ Warp powered 65T fast charging technology.
While the OnePlus 9R has the same 4500mAh battery and fast charging support as its more expensive siblings, it lacks wireless charging support. If you are not a Fan of cables, you may prefer the convenience of the Standard OnePlus 9.
OnePlus 9R vs OnePlus 9-early judgment
It is difficult to make a judgment on these two OnePlus 9 phones, because the limited availability of the 9R makes them much harder to get your hands on them.
However, with the models, it is definitely worth comparing them. If you want to save money and don’t mind not found Qualcomm’s recent flagship chipset, an Ultra-wide 50MP camera and wireless charging, take a look at the OnePlus 9R. The phone has a display similar to the OnePlus 9 and is a step above the 8T in terms of performance.
However, if you like to spend a little more on the recent specifications, the OnePlus 9 is better equipped and easier to order in the UK, without breaking the bank like many of its flagship rivals.
